Field note · On rest

The Sunday I cancelled everything and told no one

No announcement, no apology tour. I just… didn’t. The world continued. I had soup. 10/10, would disappear again.

Announcing a rest day is a bad idea. The moment it is announced it becomes a performance, with an audience and a review, and then you have to have a good time or explain why you did not.

So I said nothing. No explanation, no rescheduling, no reason offered. I was simply not available, and when the day was over nobody had noticed, which stung for about a minute and then felt like a small door opening.

The soup was good. The evening was long. I read half a book and finished none of it.

The first time you do it, the day feels stolen. You keep waiting for the bill. It does not arrive, and somewhere around four in the afternoon you stop listening for it, which is when the rest actually starts.

Since then I keep a day like that where I can, roughly once a month. Quiet things are easier to protect, and the diary does not need to know about all of them. Sundays are the easiest place to start.

Cancel one thing this week without a story. If anyone asks, say you were busy. You were.

The Slow Letter

One slow note a week — a thought from the book, a story from my kitchen. Never a productivity tip. Leave whenever; I'll take it as self-care.
