On rest

Rest is not the reward. It's the ground.

We’ve got it backwards: rest as the prize for finishing. But nothing grows from a prize. Everything grows from ground. Lie down, you’re already doing it.

Watch what happens when rest is the bonus at the end of the list. The list grows. The rest shrinks. You arrive at the end of a good day and find you have nothing left to lie down on.

Ground is what the day stands on while it happens. Sleep is what makes Tuesday possible, and food is what the work runs on. None of them are wages.

Think about how you talk to yourself on a bad day. Nobody says: you may lie down once you have earned it. Bodies do not work that way. They ask, you answer, and the asking does not stop because you have a deadline.

Once you see it that way, resting before you have earned it stops feeling like cheating. Nobody earns the floor. You stand on it, and things grow.

The strange part is that the days I start from lying down are the days I get more done. I have stopped needing to know why.

Lie down for ten minutes before you do anything else today. Not after. Before.

The Slow Letter

One slow note a week — a thought from the book, a story from my kitchen. Never a productivity tip. Leave whenever; I'll take it as self-care.
